As of 21st September 2026, Gateshead Maternity Services are implementing a self-referral tool that will allow pregnant women and people to directly refer themselves to Gateshead Maternity Services 
for their community care. This process is already in place in all other areas of North East and North Cumbria, and uses BadgerNet to support a fully digital referral process. 

The referral form allows them to collect key information at the point of referral, digitises the paper process and will support more timely referral to maternity services.
